NEW
YORK 1875 STATE CENSUS
This is another State Census that Matt Putnam found and got going and is still going till it’s complete. I kinda added bits of info and edited the stuff and this is going to turn out to be a great help when finished umpteen years from now. And when done we’ll have censuses every 5 years from 1850 to 1880. No other state like this. Everyone from Matt back to the census takers have been a great help.

County living with her. “Mrs.” is a housekeeper at the Globe Hotel where she
lives. In 1880 we find out that “Mrs.” is actually named Emily and she has
remarried a Simeon Gilbert. Ida is living with them and is listed as “Putnam.”
No ideas on who Emily’s Putnam husband was though.

Albany going all the way back to 1840. He will be here again in 1880 before

The census listing was Putnam Millman 55 Canada, his wife Dennis 39 Canada,
Manuel 9 NY, Millman 6 NY, Emma 5 NY. I am not sure if the census taker in 1870
made an error and their last name should have been Putnam, or whether they
changed their last name. They will be here in 1880 but Anthony will be known as

be the same family. In 1855 Joseph said that he was born in Canada. Then Joseph

The only Putnams listed in Schoharie County in 1830 was the family of John
Locke Putnam and Phebe Town. However, James is not a member of that family.
There was an Aaron Putman listed in Schoharie, Schoharie County in the 1825

either case, they are a Dutch family.
REBECCA
PUTMAN Brownville, Jefferson County
She is
a Widow 72 born in Albany County. She is living with William Wynegar a Farmer 56 born in Jefferson County and his wife
Sarah Wynegar 50 born in Jefferson County. Rebecca is
listed as someone’s Mother and should be Sarah’s mom. Rebecca is too young to
be Rebecca Frayer who was born about 1790. Rebecca Frayer Putman is still alive
until 1884 so maybe this is her but the age is off. Ebenezer George Putman and
Rebecca Frayer had a daughter named Sally Ann that was born on November 22,
1822. Perhaps Sarah is that same daughter. If the above is correct then this
would be a Dutch Family. I can’t find any Rebecca that would ft in the NY 1860,
1870, 1880 so maybe just a writing problem and not a Putman. Who knows.

a daughter of Hiram Putnam and Lucinda Stevens who are still living in
Greenwood.
GEORGE

origins your guess is as good as mine. In all of the Federal Censuses Archibald
says he was born in NY but then in the 1865 and in this State Census he says he
was born in MA. Interestingly, in the 1855 census Archibald is listed as born
in Rensselaer County. The death certificate of his son Louis Putnam states that
Archibald was born in Vermont. We’re confused too.

Express Messenger 30 MI, his wife Gabriella (listed here as “Grovella”) is 20 NM, George 7 Months Born in Tompkins
County. Oscar J. Putnam is the son of Silas Putnam and Martha Washington
Jordan. Oscar was born on 16 May 1842 in Madison, Lenawee County, Michigan. He
was at home with his parents in 1850 and 1860. In 1870 Oscar and Gabriella (who
was 13 at the time) were in Cubero Precinct, Valencia County, New Mexico. By
1880 Oscar and George will be in Dunkirk, Chautauqua County but Gabriella will
be gone. Gabriella separated from Oscar which subsequent events proved was a good
idea. Oscar’s second wife was a Miss Carrie F. Watson Oscar appears to have
been disturbed and ended his life by killing his second wife and himself on
April 26, 1884. One newspaper article stated that Oscar “in the west was known
